Famed makeup artist Nick Barose, the man responsible for enhancing the already stunningly beautiful Lupita Nyong'o. He sat down with Essence and explained what he keeps in his makeup bag to give his clients the looks that everyone is clamoring for. But more importantly the various looks of Lupita Nyong'o. Nick Barose is a master in his field and I'm so glad that he has given Essence a peek into makeup bag and some small techniques that can be used by an everyday woman.



Below are all the products listed by Nick Barose via Essence Magazine. You will read my experience (and non experience) with some of them and you will also see the price and where to find them.


MAC Matchmaster Foundation

I've actually never used MAC foundation but it seems to be quite popular. When I visited the site they had colors for the typical skin tones: Light, Medium, Dark (or rather their version). They don't very in terms of shade but mixing foundations is encouraged. The foundation is pretty pricey at $32 a bottle but for MAC you pay for quality. Its always top shelf and I can pay for quality, at least its worth the price. Here's what the makeup artist Nick Barose had to say via Essence.

"This foundation looks like skin, and you can layer it. To find your perfect shade, test foundation on the jawline. When applying, I use two shades, the lightest in the center to brighten up the face. I think that's key to getting seamless application.” —Nick Barose

IMAN Perfect Response Oil Blotting Pressed Powder

I've used IMAN before and found it to be a good product for women of color. But when I used it IMAN didn't have enough color range for me. The colors were either very orange/red or way too light or yellow/olive and way too dark. However that was several years ago and I haven't used or tried any of the newest colors that have been added to IMAN line. The coverage is great, the face primer is absolutely AWESOME and it's a definite must try on the list of foundations/pressed powders for women of color.

The IMAN Perfect Response Oil Blotting Pressed Powder works to absorb oil and leave the face with a matte finish. IMAN can be purchased at your local drugstore (RiteAid, Drugstore.com, Soap.com, Walgreens, CVS, etc). It's pretty inexpensive at $16. I know thats double what Revlon, L'Oreal, Covergirl and Maybelline are charging but look at it this way in terms of drugstore makeup brands they have the widest array of color and they offer the best coverage. Again you're paying for quality so be mindful of that. Its about half of what MAC's foundation costs. Which is a pretty good deal if you ask me.

Michelle Phan is a YouTube Beauty Guru that has garnered attention for her awesome beauty tutorials and cosplay transformations. I've been subscribed to her channel for years but I had no idea how big her fanreach was. She has over 4.5 million subscribers and over a billion page views. For 2 years Ms. Phan has been working on her own makeup line with L'Oreal. And now its finally available! em Michelle Phan is her incredible makeup line em is a Vietnamese word meaning you which she uses as a term of endearment to her loyal and ever growing fanbase!

The Life Palette has 36 refillable shades of eye, lip and cheek color. Each palette is $75 USD and they have interchangeable pots so you can mix and match and create a set that you love and enjoy. She has several sets that represents different looks: Beach, Career, Love, Party, Night Life and Day. Each set represents a different occasion, different look, so all you would have to do is pull out one palette do your makeup, slip it in your purse for touchups and retouches and you're ready!
Foundation is like the #1 issue for minorities. There are never enough colors and they are broad enough to ensure that you don't look too dark or too light. So mostly we either mix and match or try to find a foundation that is close to our skin tone. Well I think Michelle Phan has figured out that problem. At $30 a pop these HUGE foundation compacts are affordable and they have a broad spectrum of colors to choose from. Although I would suggest you still mix foundations. They can provide the perfect coverage by mixing. Believe Me! Now below you're going to see my foundation picks from her site:

My face has both warm and cool undertones. During the winter its a little cooler so I like to wear a foundation that has more of a red undertone. In the summer oddly enough my face is a little warmer so I like to tone it down with a foundation that has a olive/yellow undertone to it. And then lastly sometimes I like to mix the foundations to give my face the perfect shade of even tone brown skin. So here are the two shade their very close in color actually:

Everything from her foundations to her eyeshadows is made with every ethnicity in mind. Her site is very interactive she has tutorials, full length customer reviews, even SWATCHES, its a fun site and Michelle is an awesome person. She's fun perky and makes everything seem effortless. I think everyone would benefit from this Guru's makeup. em cosmetics caters to all ethnicities and I'm so glad because many small and large cosmetic companies don't. But because Michelle has such a diverse fan base it was easy for her to find the various colors for every skin type and color and incorporate that into her line.

I'm telling you I'm going to in and buying some of these cosmetics for my birthday and I can't wait! Enjoy some of Michelle's tutorials and other videos involving her wonderful cosmetic line em Michelle!

In Makeup you advance by doing. There is no shortcut you just have to get up and do it! I have gotten better in my makeup application. My only problem area is my eyebrows but I am working on it ;). Anywho here are some photos of my makeup progression. And some Videos!

In the first half of my makeup applications I was only using one color and not doing any blending or crease cutting. It looked good enough, gave me a small pop of color. In the second of half of my makeup applications you'll be able to see how I began to use certain techniques in my makeup: crease cutting, playing with dark and light colors, giving my eyes shape and dimension.














These are just the different ways I have done my makeup. I've been able to evolve in makeup because I kept at it. Makeup is an enhancement tool. You can do so many creative things with makeup and its simple small techniques that can help you to achieve everything from smokey eyes to simple everyday looks. Just try it out.
